Boosting your metabolism doesn’t have to be complex. Here are 4 easy hacks to give your fat-burning system a boost.
EAT PROTEIN WITH EVERY MEAL AND MAKE IT SPICY
Every time you eat, your body’s metabolism gets to work. It’s using your extra calories to digest that food. Proteins require the most energy to break down, so if you make sure to include protein with every meal, you’ll be boosting your metabolism, increasing your metabolic rate by 15% to 30%.
While you’re at it, making your meals not only protein-packed but on the spicier side can also contribute to a faster metabolism. Although studies have shown only a small metabolic boost by eating peppers, over six and a half years, you can lose an average of one pound just by making your meals spicy. It’s worth it if you like your food to have some bite.
Choose HIIT Workouts
When you perform high-intensity interval training (HIIT), you’re naturally boosting your metabolism both during your workout and for up to 24 hours afterward. Kickboxing, circuit training, and sprints are all great examples of HIIT and will all contribute to a faster metabolism.
HIIT is characterized by going back and forth between intense bursts of activity followed by short periods of rest. By doing so, you’re training your heart to pump blood throughout your body more effectively and training it to recover more quickly.
There’s a bit more science to it than that, but for all intents and purposes, HIIT burns fat and increases your metabolic rate far more efficiently than other styles of training.
DRINK COLD WATER, GREEN TEA, AND COFFEE
In general, drinking more water is something we can all be better at. Instead of sugary drinks like sodas and “sports drinks,” drinking water is a huge step in the right direction of it’s not already a habit.
Some studies show that drinking cold water speeds up your metabolism even more. Since it takes more energy to bring cold water up to your body’s temperature, your metabolism has to work a little bit harder.
Other beverages that have shown signs of boosting metabolism are green tea and coffee, even if they only do so in small amounts. Green tea is thought to convert stored fat into fatty acids that can aid in your body’s fat-burning power and the caffeine in coffee is known to have the same effect.
GET PLENTY OF SLEEP
These days, sleep is severely underrated. Hustle culture is all the rage and some people swear by the maxim that they’ll sleep when they’re dead. However, a poor night’s sleep is a leading cause of weight gain and can negatively impact your overall health.
Sleep deprivation has a negative impact on your metabolism as it can increase your blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. Plus, when you don’t get adequate sleep, the hormone that controls hunger gets a boost while the hormone that tells you that you’re full is decreased.
If you haven’t been getting enough sleep lately, this is your sign to prioritize a full eight-hour rest each night.
